60 Seconds with God – Proverbs Week

Let me ask you a question: Why do you suppose people gossip? What’s the temptation in gossip? Because, people will listen to anything if you whisper it. Right? Gossip gives us a feeling of power or superiority. When we want to tell others private information, and they want to listen, it feels good, doesn’t it?

What does the Bible say about gossip? One verse, of many verses of scripture, is Proverbs 16:27, which says, “An ungodly man digs up evil, and it is on his lips like a burning fire.”

Let me ask you another question: Do we, sometimes, rejoice in the temptation of gossip so much, that we seek out information to find more gossip? And, once we find that gossip, it becomes a burning fire on our tongues, doesn’t it? We can’t wait to tell someone! Here’s a suggestion: It’s best to be quiet rather than to spread the gossip we hear. Today, if you are privy to private information, keep that information private.
