If you were to compare your Faith to an inanimate object, what would that object be?
Some would compare their Faith to an ocean. In other words, their Faith is as wide as human understanding and rivals the depth of Christ’s love for us (Rom. 5:8, John 3:16, Matt. 22:37-39). Some would compare their Faith to a mountain. In other words, their Faith is tall and strong, unmovable within its convictions, remaining steady through the storms of life (1 Cor. 15:58). How about a single grain of mustard seed? Yes, some would compare their faith to an object the size of a single seed. In Matthew 17, Jesus had just cast out a demon from a young boy (Matt 17:18). At the conclusion of this miracle, His disciples ask Him a question privately, saying, “Why could we not cast it out?” To this question, Jesus answers, in vs. 20, “Because of your little Faith. For truly I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to here,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.” (Matt. 17:20)
Wait, if I have Faith the size of a single grain of mustard seed, I can move mountains? Yes. Obviously, Jesus isn’t speaking of literal mountains within this verse, even though, through Him, anything is possible (Phil. 4:13). It is my belief, that Jesus is speaking of the metaphorical ‘mountains’ we experience in our lives. You know, the obstacles and burdens that plague our identity as Christians. We all have them. Every day, we experience temptations or situations that attempt to dim our Christian light (Matt. 5:14), along with the lights that illuminate the path of righteousness we walk upon (Prov. 8:20, Prov. 4:18). They encompass our lives and seem designed to discourage our Faith, sometimes proving successful. It is no secret, temptation is difficult. It’s natural to grow wearisome of these burdens that invade our life. After all, that is the reason Jesus refers to them as ‘mountains’, or a certain structure that appears impossible to climb given the enormity of life’s struggles. Nevertheless, do not be discouraged! We can move those ‘mountains’ through one specific avenue: Faith. Just as the scripture says, with Faith, nothing will be impossible for you (Matt. 17:20). You see, it isn’t the amount of Faith you possess, it is the quality of your Faith. Whether your Faith is comparable to an ocean or a mountain, one grain of pure Faith is as strong as any amount of Faith. In fact, as the verse says, that one grain can move ‘mountains.’
To what does your Faith compare? A single grain of seed.
